Browning Mank

QUICKSAND

The Florida heat burns deep
So I’ve got to have a better plan
Than a dimple faced sad-eyed northern boy
Transplanted
To
A
Sticky
Beach

Of
Quicksand

I live on a postage stamp
So it’s not just dumb luck
When my best friend
Finds her first kiss first fuck
With a dumbass awwshucks
Called my current boyfriend

It’s sad sad sad… she’s gonna get stuck
And now I’ve lost a perfectly good girlfriend
To a charming dime a dozen cuck
Yep
That’s
What
Sucks
She’s
Gonna
Get
Stuck

In
Quicksand

I pick the two of ‘em up just for kicks
Rolling up in my ‘Stang ‘66
(The fine machine my Daddy got me)
I rev the engine and shift the stick
Telling my bestie her first bang wasn’t worth that prick
(A sloppy second… third…hell too many)

Then I drop those fools
A mile out on the envelope
Among the snakes and palmettos
Sun a’blazing no clouds in sight
Making ‘em hump it home
A little bit wiser
Yet
Still
A
Lot
Less
Bright
Sinking

In
Quicksand

The smitten girly girl in a now sweaty tee
Flashes flat chested nipples
(Just to tease)
The disinterested boy toy
Flashing his pearly whites to himself
(While whipping it out to pee)

His tanned shallow skin scorched with regret
For the hot chick who doesn’t put out (yet?)
A fool’s trade for the girl next door
To the girl next door
His short-sighted sin
Left this dick
Hanging
In
the
wind

In
Quicksand

I can’t get stuck
If I don’t get laid
In a small town
Better to not give a fuck
About drinking beer in the woods
I’ll drink a coke instead

Don’t get me wrong
I can still do my thing
Flirt and play as I please
Dance my ass off
Make ‘em weak in the knees
But I’ll find my
Long-term
Luck
Far
Away

From
Quicksand

Browning confesses: "Witness the crime of teenage betrayal by a beloved girlfriend and befuddled boyfriend. My ambivalence stems from not wanting to inadvertently get “stuck” in my small town by falling for a rooted local boy. (Ah, youth. Sigh.)"

Thats an evocative poem Browning. It captures the feeling and atmosphere of Florida, the searing heat, anger and melancholy of betrayal, and the depths of those fleeting teenage relationships.
