Duane confesses: "I’ve been writing some haiku lately, working to pare down descriptions to the fewest words that communicate a scene, and thinking about limited animation. These weren’t crime-related, but then I got to thinking about The Five-Two, and this popped into my head. Bang."
DUANE SPURLOCK is related to a long line of long-winded tall tale tellers. Recent books include Airship Hunters, an SF tale co-written with Jim Beard and set in 1897, and Fighting Alaska, a north-western tale set in Alaska during the 1900 gold rush and featuring Wyatt Earp, Rex Beach, and Tex Rickard.

Elaine Person
Arm in arm, two men
strolled until someone shot them.
Just father and son.

Elaine confesses: "I live in Orlando where the Pulse nightclub shooting happened. In some cultures, it is common for men to walk arm in arm. I thought about what crime could occur if a prejudiced person misinterpreted this affection. Life is perception. Perception and reality can differ."
ELAINE PERSON’s parody of King Arthur appeared in Random House’s A Century of College Humor. Elaine teaches writing workshops at libraries, churches, for Road Scholar, and Crealdé School of Art. In 2018, Elaine won the Saturday Evening Post Limerick Contest. Elaine is published in Florida Writers Association’s short story collections, Poets of Central Florida anthologies, and contributes to and edits Florida State Poets Association’s annual anthologies. Her writing is included in Haikuniverse.com, Sandhill Review, and Not Your Mother’s Book. Elaine writes “Person”alized poems and stories for all occasions. During these serious times, she feels her performances of her one-woman show Humor in a Hurried and Harried World elevate the spirit.

SANTA ANA WINDS
Santa Ana winds
Itchy heat swirls through L.A.
Husbands, watch your necks

Ray confesses: "The first paragraph of Chandler's 'Red Wind' is one of the best in literature. He delivers setting, pace, voice, and the main character's attitude without once mentioning any of these things. It's fantastic, and I hope my haiku provides an introduction to this remarkable paragraph."
RAY DANIEL writes mysteries based in and around Boston. He lives in the wilds beyond Rt. 128 where he works the fertile soil of his lawn.

Dylan confesses: "So while my wife and I were at Whole Foods, there's this older couple behind us. He in a Yale t-shirt and she dressed for gardening. They absolutely hated each other, screaming back and forth in a whispery kind of tone. I thought: 'Oh, yeah. Crime scene waiting to happen.'"
WILLIAM DYLAN POWELL writes dark, and often funny, mystery fiction set in Texas. He's the author or co-author of a half-dozen books, and winner of awards from the Robert L. Fish Memorial Award Fund and the Mystery Writers of America. Powell's work has been featured in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Needle: A Magazine of Noir, Beat to a Pulp, Dirty Noir, Pulp Modern, The Flash Fiction Offensive, and a host of fine truck stop bathroom walls across the Texas badlands.

Duane Spurlock
Holiday sales job
Cashier desk customer surge
Skimming credit cards
Gerald So reads Duane's haiku:

Duane confesses: Pre-Black-Friday stress in the bank, unwilling witness to complaints: yoked by despair, choked by a tightening skein of fees. Everyone in the place slumped with the pressure of holiday economics. I thought about the larcenous methods clever folks might apply as leverage against the weight. The haiku was the result.
DUANE SPURLOCK is a writer and illustrator. His most recent eBook is A Quiet Night in the Dark in LaPlata, Missouri, 1942, which is available for the Kindle. A book he illustrated, The Bleeding Horse and Other Ghost Stories, written by Brian Showers, won the 2008 Children of the Night Award from the Dracula Society. He lives with his family in Kentucky, where they whistle, garden, and tell each other stories.

Michael confesses: Grey winter's day: I'm on San Francisco's Geary Street, past Polk—a haven of transiency. A tree in full bloom. "Why haven't I encountered this before?" I wonder. My eyes are drawn to a wall of scrawls. A poster of a beautiful young man: Gone missing. Hereabouts. The haiku comes.
MICHAEL CHACKO DANIELS, a former community worker and clown, San Franciscan, grew up in Bombay, India. He was a Volunteer In Service To America for five years. His haiku have appeared in Eclectica, Grey Sparrow Journal, and The Battered Suitcase. Book: Morning in Santiniketan (Haiku; Writers Workshop, Calcutta, 2010).
