The Cruelest Month

"Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters."

The Five-Two traditionally celebrated with a blog tour formerly called 30 Days of The Five-Two and The Cruelest Poetry Month, spotlighting participants' favorite poems. This year I shortened the event name to pay full homage to Eliot.

There's no full tour, but we are open to guest poetry commentaries and we need two more Poems of the Week to round out the month.

Creating this year's image inspired me. I hope you're inspired to submit so the site can continue. My only socials are Mastodon and YouTube, so I very much appreciate your mentioning The Five-Two in your circles. Thanks as always.

Commentaries




For April 6, 2023, Charles Rammelkamp's commentary on "The Conspiracy Buff" by David Cranmer:

There now exists an underground railroad for women in America seeking abortions. Think about that. Women are legally regarded as less than human, as reproductive slaves. Governments are examining cell phone and social media data to root out possible offenders.

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the Right has been on a rampage, a moral crusade, “protecting the life of the unborn.” In state after state the restrictions are tighter and tighter. The crusaders sound so sanctimonious. The world seen through a “Christofascist” prism indeed, to use David Cranmer’s phrase in “The Conspiracy Buff,” in which his frustration with the conspiracists finally boils over when the credulous person whom he is addressing, a person gleefully willing to believe that Democrats are pedophiles, that the government is implanting tracking devices in the Covid vaccines, that the birther claims about Obama are true, and the rest of the nonsense, calls the story of the ten-year-old Ohio girl who was raped and had to go Indiana for an abortion – and then the Christofascist Indiana authorities were more concerned about prosecuting the doctor than helping the child – “fake news.”

The conspiracist calls it “fake news” because it does not support his narrow worldview – the one in which immoral Socialists (whatever “Socialism” is; they just know it means evil) are trying to undermine Donald Trump and God. In Margery Taylor Greene we trust.

The poem is constructed of six three-line stanzas, the third line of which is a single word or phrase, culminating in a hearty “Fuck you!” to the conspiracy buff – much as many of us find the kneejerk defense of any criminal act Donald Trump does just as frustrating. The Cruelest Poetry Month 2022

April is National Poetry Month, "launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996 to remind the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and, of course, poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives."

The Five-Two participates with an annual blog tour. Originally called 30 Days of The Five-Two, featuring guest posts about Five-Two poems, its new name, from T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land", is apropos of our crime theme but also reflects the tour's growth beyond Five-Two poems. It's a chance for anyone to post about any poetry and introduce themselves and their work (poetry or not) to a new audience.

We will feature four debut Poems of the Week and any guest posts contributed in preparation for or during the tour itself. If you'd like to join, email me a link to your entry or the entry itself (text, video, etc.) to post here.


For April 6, Charles Rammelkamp's commentary on "Susan Smith's Dream" by Sally Weston Ziph:

Sally Weston Ziph’s chilling poem, the retributive nightmare of a woman who drowns her own children, must be read with the knowledge of the crimes on top of the crimes Smith committed, in our racially charged society. It’s the national nightmare. Not only did she kill her children, she blamed a black man. Her motive? Trying to make herself more attractive to a popular local white man. But along comes justice, at least in her dream.

The blue van rises
from the bottom of the lake

tilts on its side and floats
back to the dock.

You can almost hear the nightmare movie music swelling as the impossible happens with the ineluctable logic of dreams. “Water pours

out of its windows, forming
pockets of air that release the screams

of her small sons strapped
into car seats.

At this point the horror movie music reaches a crescendo with the screams of the victims. The moral karma at the heart of the world, in all dreams of cosmic justice, rears up and slaps Susan Smith as with a giant flyswatter. She stumbles backwards, the way the guilty do in all horror movies, as the van rolls slowly, ineluctably, toward her. Yes! How satisfying, the mother who kills her children and blames it on a nonexistent black man, punished in the theater of dreams! Her guilt is plain to all, visible to all, “under the moon’s white eye.” —Charles Rammelkamp

30 Days of The Five-Two (2020)

April is National Poetry Month, as "inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture."

The Five-Two joins the celebration with a month-long blog tour. Since this year's COVID-19 outbreak has affected scheduling, I'd appreciate if you simply link to any Five-Two poems you enjoy on your social media. I hope your followers share links with their followers, and so on, promoting poetry in general and The Five-Two specifically.

We will feature four debut Poems of the Week and any guest posts contributed in preparation for or during the tour itself. If you wish to post any Five-Two-related material, email me a link to your entry or the entry itself to post here.

Also challenge yourself to write poems and submit to The Five-Two by April 23 (Shakespeare's birthday). Accepted poems will be published in May and beyond.

The Five-Two joins the celebration with a month-long blog tour inviting you to post about poetry. If you don't have a blog, email me your entry and you'll be my guest here.

Your entry can be as creative as you like. Suggestions:

30 Days of The 5-2 (2014)

In 1996, the Academy of American Poets established National Poetry Month, April. In that spirit, I invite you to spread the word about The 5-2 on our third annual April blog tour.

30 Days of The 5-2 is driven not by guest posts to your blogs, but by your own posts about poetry. Most participants pick a favorite 5-2 poem and blog about it on their scheduled dates, but you can be as creative with your post as you like. For example:

  • Interview a 5-2 contributor
  • Discuss a favorite poem not from The 5-2
  • Post your own poetry or fiction in response to a 5-2 poem
  • 5-2 contributors, discuss your poems in greater detail

If you don't have your own blog but would like to participate, email your entry to G_SO at YAHOO dot COM, and I'll post it at The 5-2 itself. I'm fine scheduling multiple tour stops on the same day or about the same poem.

30 Days of The 5-2 Blog Tour

In 1996, the Academy of American Poets established National Poetry Month, April. In that spirit, I invite 5-2 contributors and fans on a blog tour through April.

If your site doesn't usually discuss poetry, the tour is a chance to surprise your audience and engage The 5-2's audience. Most participants browse our archived poems, pick a favorite, and discuss it on a date of their choice, but the format and content of entries are open.

If you don't have your own blog but would like to participate, email me your entry, and I'll post it here. Multiple entries about the same poem or on the same day are fine. If you're inspired to join in during the tour, I'm happy to have you.

30 Days of The 5-2 Blog Tour
